Gagnon, Charles

1934-2003

Quebec painter, Abstraction

A visionary multidisciplinary artist, Charles Gagnon is one of the pillars of Canadian contemporary art. Trained in New York in the 1950s, he distinguished himself through a practice that explored the boundaries between painting, photography, and experimental film.

His pictorial work, often associated with the lyrical abstraction movement, is characterized by a constant exploration of space, framing, and light.

Through his famous series of “windows” and abstract landscapes, he challenges our perception of reality by playing on the contrast between geometric precision and the freedom of the brushstroke.
