About Feito López, Luis

A painter from Madrid, Luis Feito López is a leading figure in European Informal Art. After discovering abstraction in Paris in the 1950s, he returned to Spain to co-found the El Paso group, a revolutionary movement that broke the cultural isolation of Franco’s Spain by introducing a radical and modern visual language.

Feito’s philosophy is rooted in abstract expressionism and the pursuit of raw inner strength. For him, painting is not a representation, but a trace of energy. His aesthetic blends Spanish tradition (chiaroscuro, restraint) with a quasi-mystical approach influenced by Zen philosophy. He sought to achieve a balance between the chaos of matter and the discipline of the mind.

In his early work, he used materials such as sand and cement mixed with paint to create thick surfaces, evoking volcanic landscapes or geological textures.

His palette then focused on Black, White, and Red, creating compositions where light seems to burst forth from deep darkness. Later, his work became more refined, favoring circular forms or bands of vibrant colors, reminiscent of Eastern calligraphy in their simplicity and visual impact.

With the El Paso group, he restored Spain to a central position on the global contemporary art scene.
