About Falardeau, Antoine-Sébastien

A true pioneer, Antoine-Sébastien Falardeau developed an aesthetic of classicism and refinement. Although he began his career in Quebec, it was in Italy that he forged his style, becoming an unparalleled copyist of the Great Masters of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. His work is distinguished by exceptional technical mastery, a dramatic use of chiaroscuro, and a finesse of line that earned him the title of “Chevalier” (Knight) from the Grand Duke of Tuscany. He excelled at capturing the velvety light and rich textures typical of the Florentine school.

His artistic philosophy centered on formal perfection and the ideal of beauty. For Falardeau, art was a quest for technical excellence and a celebration of European pictorial traditions. He firmly believed that studying the Old Masters was the only path to artistic greatness. His philosophy rested on the idea that the painter must be a craftsman of light, capable of transcending mere copying to breathe new life into classical compositions. His success in Florence made him a symbol of achievement for Canadian artists, proving that talent born in Quebec could shine in the cradle of the arts.
