About Villeneuve, Arthur

A self-taught artist of raw power, Arthur Villeneuve developed an aesthetic of instinctive and narrative art. His style is recognizable by its dense compositions, devoid of traditional perspective, where urban landscapes and dreamlike scenes collide. He used bold colors and dark outlines to define shapes that were often fantastical or distorted by emotion. His own house, which he entirely covered in frescoes, bears witness to his visceral need to fill space with imagery, transforming daily reality into a personal mythological universe.

His artistic philosophy centered on pure creative impulse. For Villeneuve, painting was not an aesthetic choice but an urgent necessity following a late-life revelation. He did not seek to please critics but to release the visions that inhabited him, blending childhood memories, local history, and fantastic nightmares. His philosophy rested on radical authenticity: he believed art must spring from the heart and soul without intellectual filtering. Initially mocked, he eventually gained recognition as a master of outsider art (art brut), proving that genius can flourish outside any academic framework.
