De Grace, Nérée

1920-2002

Quebec painter, Art Naïf

An Acadian painter and illustrator from New Brunswick, Nérée De Grâce created a unique aesthetic often described as naïve and dreamlike. His style is characterized by brilliant colors, poetically distorted perspectives, and an abundance of narrative detail. He transformed scenes of Acadian life—weddings, communal chores, legends—into magical visions where time seems suspended in an atmosphere of perpetual celebration.

His artistic philosophy centered on the celebration of memory. For De Grâce, art was a means of preserving a people’s soul by transfiguring reality through the imagination. He rejected austere realism in favor of joy and wonder, seeing in every aspect of the land a source of universal poetry. His work stands as a vibrant tribute to the resilience and vitality of Acadian culture, for which he became one of the most cherished ambassadors.
