About Laurencin, Marie

A leading figure in the Parisian avant-garde of the early 20th century, Marie Laurencin carved out a unique and resolutely feminine voice within an art world dominated by men. A muse to Apollinaire and a close friend of Picasso, she broke free from the conventions of Cubism to create a poetic world that is instantly recognizable.
Laurencin rejected the geometric harshness and primary colors of her contemporaries. Her philosophy centered on the pursuit of softness, harmony, and a certain form of refinement. She favored a limited palette—grays, pinks, and pastel blues—and a simplification of forms that bordered on the surreal, creating a dreamlike world where time seems suspended.
Her style, often described as “nymph-like,” focuses on stylized faces with dark almond-shaped eyes, often surrounded by animals (deer, dogs) or flowers.
Beyond the canvas, she left her mark on the decorative arts, creating sets for the Ballets Russes and illustrating numerous literary works.
She was one of the few women to exhibit with the Cubists at the Section d’Or, proving that a “feminine” aesthetic could have a place in modernity. She redefined the image of the modern woman, blending melancholy and sophistication, and had a lasting influence on the worlds of fashion and design.
