About Obregón Roses, Alejandro Jesús

A painter, sculptor, and printmaker, Alejandro Obregón is the driving force behind modern painting in Colombia. Born in Barcelona to a Colombian father and a Spanish mother, he broke free from the constraints of academicism to create a unique visual language, where vigorous expressionism meets the mystical exuberance of the Caribbean.

Obregón’s art does not merely depict the world; it reinvents it through a passionate and sometimes political vision. His artistic philosophy is rooted in a fusion of nature and history. Condors, bulls, barracudas, and Andean landscapes are not merely animal subjects. They become allegories of strength and freedom, but also of the violence inherent in the human condition and the history of his country.

His technique is distinguished by broad, almost brutal brushstrokes and a dramatic use of color. His vibrant flat areas of color and rich textures create an atmosphere of pictorial “magical realism,” where the boundary between abstraction and figuration blurs.

Obregón often used his brush to denounce social and political violence (notably in his iconic series “La Violencia”). For him, the artist is a witness whose work must resonate with the pains and hopes of his time.
