About O’Neill, Daniel

A self-taught painter born in Belfast, Daniel O’Neill is a central figure in modern Irish art. A former electrician who became a full-time artist after World War II, he developed a dreamlike and melancholic style that set him apart from his contemporaries through its emotional depth and poetic vision of Ireland.

O’Neill’s approach prioritizes atmosphere and evocation over geographical precision. He sought to capture the “inhabited solitude” of landscapes and people, creating scenes that seem to exist on the border between dream and reality.

His style is recognizable by his fluid technique and dramatic use of color. He favored rich, dark hues—deep blues, emerald greens, and scorched earth tones—illuminated by touches of white or moonlit yellow.

His female faces, often stylized with large, sad eyes, exude vulnerability and timeless elegance. His views of Ireland (often of Connemara) transform the hills and villages into deserted theatrical sets, where light seems to emanate from the earth itself.

Today, his work is celebrated for its ability to express the Irish soul through a universal prism of beauty and nostalgia, and is featured in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Ireland.
