About Delacroix, Eugène

A leading figure of the French Romantic school, Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) revolutionized 19th-century painting by replacing the primacy of neoclassical drawing with that of color. His work, marked by an unprecedented dramatic intensity, signifies the definitive transition to modernity and foreshadows Impressionism. For Delacroix, art is not a slavish imitation of nature, but a “bridge” between the artist’s spirit and that of the viewer. A pioneer of optical theories, he used color to structure space and evoke emotion. His use of complementary contrasts (the famous red and green) and his vibrant brushwork lend his canvases an organic energy. Drawing inspiration from Shakespeare, Byron, and Dante, he reinvented history painting. He abandoned static statuary in favor of movement, passion, and at times violence, capturing the moment where heroism meets tragedy.
