About Tatossian, Armand

Of Armenian descent, Armand Tatossian developed an aesthetic of generous expressionism. His style is defined by an impetuous application of paint, worked in dense impasto using a palette knife or spatula. His landscapes and still lifes vibrate with a three-dimensional texture where color is not merely applied but sculpted onto the canvas. This approach gives his works a vital force and a relief that captures light in a spectacular fashion.

His artistic philosophy centered on vibration and movement. For Tatossian, painting had to be an immediate sensory experience. He did not seek to faithfully reproduce nature but to translate its internal energy through a choreography of bold colors. His philosophy rested on spontaneity: he often painted “alla prima,” seeking to capture the essence of a subject in a burst of pure creation, establishing him as an undisputed master of light and medium in Canada.
