Colombian artist, Boterismo
The Colombian artist Fernando Botero is the most famous Latin American artist in the world. As the creator of “Boteroism,” he established a unique visual style centered on the exaggeration of volume, transforming every subject into a monumental and sensual figure.
His philosophy is rooted in a fascination with volume as a source of aesthetic pleasure. Botero did not paint “fat” people; he expanded forms to give them a heightened physical and spiritual presence. Influenced by the Italian Renaissance and Colombian folk art, he reinvented figurative art by infusing it with a dose of humor and irony, but also with an unshakable dignity.
His art is recognizable by his figures with serene faces and ample bodies. In sculpture, his giant bronzes inhabit public squares from Paris to New York. Although his work appears joyful, Botero also used his generous forms to denounce political violence in Colombia and social injustices, proving that roundness can bear the weight of tragedy.
A cultural ambassador for his country, he has donated hundreds of works to museums in Bogotá and Medellín. His legacy is that of an artist who made modern art accessible and universal through the simple power of form.
