Guayasamin, Oswaldo

1919-1999

Ecuadorian painter, Expressionnisme

An Ecuadorian painter, sculptor, and muralist, Oswaldo Guayasamín is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Nicknamed “the painter of hands,” he dedicated his life to exposing social injustices and celebrating the resilience of Latin America’s indigenous peoples.

Guayasamín’s aesthetic is inseparable from his political and humanistic commitment. For him, art must not only be beautiful; it must serve as a testimony. His work centers on human suffering, oppression, and the hope for a more just world. He uses the human body as a vehicle for raw emotions, transforming pain into a monumental force.

His style is immediately recognizable through his thematic series, notably The Age of Anger (20th-century tragedies) and The Age of Tenderness (a tribute to his mother and to humanity).

A friend of Pablo Neruda and Fidel Castro, he has exhibited in the world’s greatest museums and created monumental murals (UNESCO in Paris, Madrid Airport). He remains a symbol of mixed-race identity and the struggle against racism and dictatorship.
