French artist, Abstraction lyrique
A Chinese-born French artist, Zao Wou-Ki brilliantly fused the heritage of Eastern calligraphy with the revolutions of Western art. His aesthetic is one of abstract landscapism, where the canvas becomes a space for elemental forces. His style is characterized by shimmering transparencies, ethereal textures, and light bursting from deep contrasts, evoking cosmic geneses or internal storms.
His artistic philosophy centered on the search for the breath (Qi). For Zao, painting was not representation but an act of meditation. After an early period influenced by Paul Klee, he moved beyond the line to explore infinite space. He sought to make the invisible visible: the wind, the movement of water, silence. His work is a masterful synthesis of contemplative Chinese tradition and the creative energy of modern abstraction.
