About Krieghoff, Cornelius David

Of German-American descent, Cornelius Krieghoff is undoubtedly the most iconic artist of mid-19th-century Canadian life. A true ethnographer of everyday life, he captured the very essence of Lower Canada’s landscapes and customs with technical precision and narrative humor.
Krieghoff is the master of genre scenes. Whether depicting joyful sleigh rides, lively cabaret scenes, or the laborious lives of the inhabitants, he treats each subject with empathy and meticulous detail that bring his works to life and make them speak volumes.
For the artist, winter is not a dormant season, but a theater of light. His rosy late-afternoon skies and the crystalline rendering of the snow attest to a keen observation of the Quebec climate, long before the advent of Impressionist trends in the country.
His portraits of First Nations people and his landscapes of wild forests reveal a fascination with the vastness and cultural diversity of the region. He combines rigorous composition, inherited from the European tradition, with a typically North American curiosity.
