An artist of exceptional sensitivity, Horace Champagne developed an aesthetic of atmospheric and impressionistic realism. His style is defined by an absolute mastery of soft pastels, a medium he works directly with his fingers to blend or layer pure pigments onto abrasive papers. He is famous for his Canadian landscapes—from snowy Laurentian undergrowths to the rugged coasts of Gaspé—as well as his Quebec street scenes and still lifes. His works are instantly recognizable by their soft, almost magical luminosity, and his unique ability to render the transparency of ice, the softness of fresh snow, and the crisp vibration of winter air.

His artistic philosophy centers on capturing the fleeting moment and pure emotion. For Champagne, who abandoned a successful commercial career at the age of 42 to devote himself entirely to his art, painting is an act of devotion toward nature. His philosophy rests on the idea that pastels, through direct physical contact and the absence of a brush, allow an immediate and intimate connection between the artist’s soul and the subject. Elected a Master Pastellist by the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada (PSEC) and honored internationally, he approaches each painting as a quest for serenity, seeking to immortalize the silent and grandiose beauty of the landscape.
