About Bruneau, Kittie

An exceptional painter and printmaker, Kittie Bruneau forged an aesthetic at the crossroads of Abstract Expressionism and Naive Art. Her style is characterized by fiery brushwork, an explosion of primary colors, and an iconography filled with totemic symbols, birds, and mythological figures. Her work is a visual dance where apparent chaos is orchestrated by an innate sense of composition, creating a universe that is both wild and playful.

Her artistic philosophy centered on absolute freedom. Trained at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal but influenced by the spirit of Automatism and the CoBrA group, she rejected all academic constraints. For Bruneau, painting was an act of psychological and spiritual liberation. Her philosophy rested on the exploration of the unconscious and an organic bond with nature—particularly that of Bonaventure in Gaspésie—which she transfigured into a theater of vibrant, primitive forms.
