About Surrey, Philip

A leading figure in Canadian art, Philip Surrey is regarded as Montreal’s greatest visual poet. A founding member of the Contemporary Art Society, he immortalized the city with a unique sensibility, capturing the mysterious atmosphere of the streets after dark.

Surrey’s work focuses on the interaction between the individual and the modern metropolis. Far from pure abstraction, he was interested in urban solitude and the poetry of everyday life. For him, the city was not merely a backdrop, but a mirror of its inhabitants’ moods: a stage where alienation, anticipation, and chance encounters play out.

His style is distinguished by an exceptional mastery of artificial light. His paintings often employ dramatic lighting (streetlamps, neon signs, car headlights), creating a narrative tension reminiscent of film noir. He is famous for his deep blue skies and wet streets that reflect the city lights. His works constitute an invaluable visual archive of Montreal from the 1940s to the 1980s.

Alongside John Lyman, he helped modernize Canadian art by moving away from traditional wilderness landscapes to focus on social life. A Member of the Order of Canada, his paintings are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada and numerous prestigious museums.
